This project is a dialogue between space, time, and culture, rooted in the distinctive canal heritage of Linping, Hangzhou, and the Haipai architectural tradition of Republican-era Shanghai. The design transcends mere stylistic imitation to explore a deeper continuity of context, with the concept of the “Modern Literati Collector” as its central narrative. The residence is conceived as both a space for contemporary living and a vessel for reflection, collection, and aesthetic cultivation—an extension of the inhabitant’s inner world.
The design begins with an analytical observation of modern family lifestyles, leading to the proposal of an “S+ Residence” spatial system that balances shared openness with personal privacy. The 18.5-meter full south-facing frontage is reimagined as a 70-square-meter integrated LDKB (Living, Dining, Kitchen, Balcony) area, forming a multifunctional “Family Core Hall.” This open layout maximizes natural light and fluidity, fostering both intimate family interaction and sociable hospitality.
In contrast, the private zones emphasize dignity and serenity. Two independent south-facing master suites provide equal comfort for multi-generational living, each with ensuite amenities, efficient storage, and expansive windows. The main suite links bedroom, walk-in closet, and five-piece bathroom in a continuous circulation, achieving a refined, hotel-like sense of luxury. An independent foyer derived from private elevator access and meticulously organized storage further reinforces the ritual of homecoming and the boundary between public and private life.
Material selection follows a restrained modern elegance. Warm wood, Fendi White stone, art glass, and bronze details create a subtle yet rich palette that interacts with natural and artificial light to evoke quiet sophistication. Furniture and art objects serve not only functional roles but also deepen the collector’s narrative.
Ultimately, this residence transcends architecture to embody a lifestyle proposition—harmonizing past and present, openness and privacy, and demonstrating how thoughtful design can elevate the quality and meaning of daily life.
