Grey Reverie

The project is a newly completed apartment designed for single occupancy. The homeowner has relatively low storage needs and instead hopes to preserve an open social area, allowing daily life to remain loosely defined rather than overly structured.
The design adopts “ink reflected on paper” as its metaphor. Layers of gray tones unfold slowly—from deep to light—spreading across walls, cabinetry, and light like ink wash diffusion. Rather than pursuing decorative presence, the space allows materials, proportions, and light to naturally compose the scene, responding to the homeowner’s lifestyle of spending extended time at home and requiring a calm yet flexible living space.
The project’s highlights are concentrated in the social area’s strategy of deliberate emptiness and the highly integrated elevation design. The TV wall in the living room is intentionally left largely unfilled by cabinetry, retaining expansive painted surfaces that provide visual pause and flexibility for future changes in furniture and personal objects. Paint finishes and system cabinetry are coordinated in closely related tonal values, softening material boundaries and forming a unified, grounded backdrop—much like ink gradually spreading across rice paper.
Upon entering the space, the scale of the entryway and kitchen area is deliberately compressed, creating an initial sense of restraint. As the view transitions into the living room, ceiling height expands, producing a rhythmic shift from low to high that naturally slows one’s pace. The wall behind the sofa is articulated with an angled cut that breaks the rigidity of a single plane, embedded with gray moru glass as a subtle yet pivotal visual element. Light refracting through the glass creates a semi-translucent quality, introducing a softened boundary that preserves minimalist order while preventing the atmosphere from becoming overly austere.
