The Indulgent Center - Reimagining San Francisco

As an essential medium of human society, architecture conveys social life and its transformations through aesthetic expression, exerting a deep influence on how humans experience and understand the world. Nevertheless, no matter how varied its forms, contemporary practice encounters dimensions—like globalization, the media, and the forces of capital—that transcend conventional architectural boundaries, highlighting the need for dialogue with these factors.

This project uses market conventions to propose a new imagined form, theatrically rendering the continuous transformations within the market. It forges connections between the physical and the invisible to explore the ways architecture interacts with contemporary realities—including globalization, the influence of capital, and media change—that lie beyond the scope of current architectural practice. It explores speculative urban forms by highlighting the movement of cities and households together. It ensures a strong connection with existing architectural structures and the surrounding context, encourages the celebration of oddity and possibility in architecture, and permits incidental interactions with the local environment, thus facilitating adaptation to the rapid changes of the contemporary world. The design of the entire project seeks to create a consciously theatrical spatial entanglement, through which users can experience the sensation of being immersed in movement within the physical realm. It includes not only forces such as globalization and trade but also the flows of daily routines, sports, relaxation, reading, and protest. In this way, the architecture becomes a visual medium of transformation, providing the city with a multifunctional space for leisure, cultural exchange, and tourism.
