Located along the riverside of New York, Data Drop reimagines the typology of a data center by transforming a closed infrastructure into an experiential public space. Instead of hiding technology behind walls, the project suspends servers from the ceiling, forming a floating
“data drop” that allows visitors to experience the energy of data at close range—symbolizing the fusion of technology and daily life.
The building adopts a diagrid structural system to achieve a column-free, open plan that maximizes spatial flexibility. Circulation and egress are carefully designed to ensure both safety and fluidity. Taking advantage of its riverside location, the design introduces natural
cooling strategies—perforated ceilings and submerged volumes use river water to dissipate heat efficiently, embodying sustainable environmental thinking.
The façade expresses a dual identity: the museum side opens toward the city, representing openness and inclusiveness, while the data center side remains private and introspective, emphasizing precision and control. Inside, the golden servers contrast dramatically with the
dark, heavy envelope, creating a sense of futuristic tension and transformation as visitors move from the urban exterior into a world of light and machinery.
Data Drop is more than a data center—it is an immersive interface between people, technology, and nature, revealing the poetic potential of architecture in the digital age.
