Designed to create a cohesive neighborhood within the wider district, Guangzhou One Pengrui represents a new model for high-rise living. It synthesizes local landscapes and urban environments into a sensitive, mixed-use design.
The nature-integrated, residential development was conceived of as part of a comprehensive masterplan and designed to anticipate future expansion. This initial phase provides luxury serviced apartments, a culture hub and vibrant outside spaces. A landscaped pedestrian bridge links these residences with a plot across the road, which is currently being developed to provide commercial and hotel accommodation.
The development utilizes its location on the banks of the Pearl River to mediate between the natural and urban environments. The architectural identity is defined by elliptical contours, recalling the graceful curves of the Pearl River. The buildings increase in height as you move away from the waterside, to maximize access to panoramic views of the river and downtown Guangzhou. Multiple levels of exterior experiences are provided, from the pedestrian’s immersive perspective at ground level to the elevated garden level and distinctive rooftop spaces. Shaded spaces beneath the ovals, punctuated with openings for daylight access, create thermally comfortable spaces.
The project prioritizes climate resiliency. The elevated ground plane creates meandering, shaded, pathways that were designed for improved thermal comfort. These lead between buildings to the waterfront and to a subway station at the edge of the site. The elevated ground planes also form part of the development’s sponge city infrastructure; their raised gardens are used for rainwater collection and to support biodiversity.

Residents’ wellbeing is prioritized across the apartments, from the biophilic landscape and pedestrian experience to the publicly accessible rooftops and extensive balconies.
